Whitey Herzog is a retired professional baseball player but is more popular as a manager. Herzog was born in New Athens, Illinois and first played in the Major League Baseball during the 1956 season. Herzog is to be inducted this 2010 in the Baseball Hall of Fame. Herzog is a left-handed player and first signed with the New York Yankees. However, Herzog was never able to play for the Yankees in the majors because he was traded to the Washington Senators during the 1956 season and debuted for the team in that very season. Herzog also played for the Kansas City Athletics, the Baltimore Orioles and the Detroit Tigers. Herzog first tried his hand as a manager for the Texas Rangers. However, he was able to have much success playing for the Kansas City Royals and led the team into three consecutive American League West Division Championships from 1976 to 1978. Herzog also managed the St. Louis Cardinals where he was able to lead the team to three National League East Division Championships but most importantly the 1982 World Series Championship.
