He also won the American League Comeback Player of the Year from the Sporting News. In 1999 he was installed as a closer by their manager Jimy Williams because the original closer, Tom Gordon , was injured. By July 2002, he was returned to the rotation and in 2003, he was one of the most successful pitchers against the New York Yankees.
