He began playing baseball in University of Northern Colorado as a pitcher for two seasons. He went to professional baseball by signing with the San Francisco Giants as an amateur free agent and played in the team's farm system for five seasons. He made his Major League Baseball debut on September 10, 1963 for the San Francisco Giants with which he played two games as a relief pitcher. He also played as a starter in eighteen more appearances for the team. He had a great 1965 season when he topped the team in pitches with 170.2 innings pitched and a 12-9 record for the team.
