Gomez was born in Rodeo, California and attended Richmond High School. The San Francisco Seals signed the young Gomez but was later purchased by the New York Yankees. In 1930, Gomez was able to make his MLB debut for the Yankees. It was in 1933 when Gomez would be named into the first of the seven consecutive All-Star selections. During the 1934 season, out of 31 games Gomez was able to win 26 games making it his best season. Throughout Gomez stay with the New York Yankees, the team was able to win a total of five World Series titles: in 1932, 1936, 1937, 1938 and 1939. In 1940, Gomez suffered an arm injury and became expendable by the Yankees. He was sold to the Boston Braves in 1943 but was never able to play for the team.
