He played high school baseball at Corvallis High School where he also became a star in basketball and football. He was part of the teams that played in the 3A State Championship in the 1978 season. He went to Cal State Long Beach and played baseball while finishing his college studies. His professional career started in the minor leagues when he became part of the Lynn Sailors. He had his first season in the Major League Baseball in 1985. In 1987, he recorded the highest number of stolen bases in the American League and did the same again in 1988. He also logged the most number of at-bats in the 1990 season with 642. He was given the Roberto Clemente Award in 1991 for his great contributions in the community and for his notable character. He played for the Baltimore Orioles in 1992 and entered a deal with the San Diego Padres in 1994. He also joined the California Angels and spent his final year in the Major League Baseball in 1994. He wrapped up his professional baseball career with 21 home runs and 353 runs batted in. He appeared in a total of 1, 374 games in all.
