Gilles Villamure is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey player in the National Hockey League. He was born in Trois Rivieres, Quebec, Canada. Villemure played as goaltender for two teams during his entire career in the National Hockey League; the New York Rangers and Chicago Black Hawks. Before he could make it to the National Hockey League, Villamure made a stint in the Western Hockey League and the American Hockey League. After a season in the junior leagues Villamure had an extensive ten year apprenticeship in the minor leagues, mainly with the Vancouver Canucks of the Western Hockey League, and the Baltimore Clippers and Buffalo Bisons of the American Hockey League. Villemure became a celebrity during his season in the minors. Also during his career in the minor league, Villemure led his team in goals. In his final two seasons in the American League, the 1968 and 1969 seasons, Villemure won the Les Cunningham Award with the Bisons as the league's most valuable player. The New York Rangers' management took notice and saw Villemure as a great backup to Eddie Giacomin, to form the most outstanding goaltending tandem in the National League during the early 1970s. Over his next three seasons, Villamure was selected to play in the National Hockey League All-Star Game for all three seasons, and shared the Vezina Trophy with Giacomin in 1971. Villemure became the No. 1 goaltender for the Rangers, but had only a humble success, and was traded to the Chicago Black Hawks during the offseason. During Villamure's two remaining seasons, he only appeared in twenty one games and in all playing poorly, and retired after the 1976 seasons.
