Gary Lamell Ward is a retired outfielder in the Major League Baseball. He bats right and previously played for the Minnesota Twins, Texas Rangers, New York Yankees and, the Detroit Tigers. Ward began his professional career on 1972 when he signed with the Minnesota Twins and his first game was on September 3, 1979 against the Kansas City Royals. In a game against the Milwaukee Brewers on September 18, 1980, he hit for the cycle and though the Twins lost the game, Ward made a record of being the only player to hit for the cycle with the fewest games. He was the Baseball Digest's American League Rookie of the Year in 1981 and was awarded with the Twins' Player of the Year and Most Improved Player in 1982. At the end of the 1984 season, Ward was traded to the Texas Rangers despite being the leader among the outfielders. He made a club record during his first season with the Rangers with 7 triples and achieved a personal high of 97 runs scored. He was the leader in batting in 1985 and 1986 in the team. Upon entering free agency, Ward signed with the New York Yankees then in 1989 with the Yankees. He was eventually released and he then signed with the Detroit Tigers . His last game was a win against the New York Yankees on October 3, 1990. He retired with a .276 batting average, and a record of 130 home runs, 597 runs batted in, and 83 stolen bases in 1287 games played. At present, Ward works as the hitting coach of the Charlotte Knights of the International League.
