He started out as a junior hockey player at Quebec Major Junior Hockey League for the team Chicoutimi Sagueneens. He played excellently in the junior league and was awarded the Guy Lafleur Trophy for being the Most Valuable Player in the playoffs. He started in the National Hockey League with the Toronto Maple Leafs as a 2nd round pick in the National Hockey League entry draft. He played 35 games for the team and had a 2.93 GAA, earning him a Dudley “Red” Garett Memorial Award. He also received the Baz Bastien Memorial Trophy for being the best goaltender. He started playing regularly in the National Hockey League in the 1992 to 1993 season. He appeared in 48 games that season and has recorded .910 save percentage. He has won the Calder Trophy for his great performance in the Stanley Cup. He was named to a lot of All-Star NHL games including the 1996 season. His last season in the National Hockey League was during the 2003 to 2004 seasons. Potvin is also a part of the NHL All-Rookie team in 1992 to 1993 seasons and the 1995 to 1996 All-Star team.
