He is among the few Vietnamese-American players in the major league. Graves graduated from Brandon High School in Brandon, Florida and was given a baseball scholarship to the University of Miami. He was then chosen by the Cleveland Indians during the fourth round of the amateur MLB Draft in 1994. It was in July 1997 when Graves was traded to the Cincinnati Reds.
