Clark Calvin Griffith was a former professional baseball player who also became a manager and owner of a few Major League Baseball teams. He was born on November 20, 1869 and started out as an American Association player. He played as a pitcher for the Boston Reds and St. Louis Browns as well as the Chicago Colts. Known by his nickname “Old Fox”, he was said to throw cut team apparel, spit and scuff team apparel and was the first to use the screwball. He was one of the first players and managers of the American League, to which he persuaded 39 other players to join. He became a member of the Chicago White Stockings, which he managed at the same time. According to sources, he spent his last few playing career with the White Stockings and was able to emerge victorious in 20 games. Griffith left the team in 1903 and in that same year, he managed New York Highlanders and retired from being a player in 1907. Griffith did not stay long as a manager of the Highlanders and soon went back to the National League in 1909 to manage the Cincinnati Reds. After 3 years, he joined American League once again, this time, for the team Washington Senators. Later on, he owned the team and helped them improve. Griffith passed away on October 27, 1955 at the age of 85. In 1946, he was included in the Baseball Hall of Fame.
