An honored former player in the Major League Baseball, Carl Owen Hubbell was born on June 22, 1903 in Carthage, Missouri. He began his baseball career by signing with the Detroit Tigers and played in the spring training of the team. Unfortunately, he did not have the approval of the pitching coach and the manager of the team and was instead sent to the International League. There, he played for the Toronto Maple Leafs and had a 7-7 record with the championship team. After a few more stints in the minors, he was then signed by the New York Giants and finally made his Major League Baseball debut on July 26, 1928. He recorded a win-loss ratio of 10-6 in his first season as a Giant and had won 20 times in a season for five consecutive seasons. He helped the Giants reach three National League championships and to the 1933 World Series where he bagged two complete games wins. He ended his major league career with 2.97 ERA, 253-154 win-loss record and 1, 678 strikeouts made. Hubbell was inducted to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1947, having participated in nine All-Star games and was named as the National League's Most Valuable Player for two times.
