Bob Purkey was an American professional Baseball player. Purkey was born and grew up in Pittsburg Pennsylvania. Purkey played as a pitcher in which he was known for his use of the “knuckleback,” which is a baseball pitch with an erratic and unpredictable motion. Purkey took his high school education at South Hills in Pittsburg Pennsylvania Purkey started his career in the Major Leagues when he signed with his hometown, the Pittsburgh Pirates, as Free Agent for the before the 1948 season. Purkey was listed at 6 ft. 2 in. and 175 lbs., he batted and throws with his right. He reached the major leagues in 1954 then debuted on April 14 of the said year. But after four seasons in which he was used largely in relief, the Pirates then traded Purkey to the Cincinnati Reds for Don Cross on December 9, 1957. And on December 14, 1964, Purkey was traded for Roger Craig and Charlie James of the St. Louis Cardinals. On April 7, 1966 Purkey was purchased back by the Pittsburgh Pirates from the St. Louis Cardinals. His final game was on July 26, 1966. After which, in August 3, 1966 Purkey was Released by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Bob Purkey died on March 16, 2008 after a battle with Alzheimer's disease.
