Bill Werle is a left-handed Major League Baseball pitcher from Oakland, California. He played for the Pittsburg Pirates, St Louis Cardinals, and lastly the Boston Red Sox in the year 1949 to 1954. He was known for the nickname “Bugs”. Weighing at 182 pounds, he pitched and batted using his left hand. First he played for the Modesto Junior College during the spring of the year 1941. They lost the game against the Compton Junior College with the score of 8-7. He pitched a complete game. The following year at the University of Southern California, Werle led the team unto 8 hits in the key in the California Intercollegiate Baseball Association contest. In the Pacific Coast League, he was selected along with the 2 other members of the San Francisco Seals pitchers to face Sgt. Joe Dimaggio from the Sta. Ana California Army Air Base. Then the Pittsburg Pirates released LeRoy Jarvis for the rights to Werle in January 1949. The National League rookie survived the 9th inning rally by the Dodgers and eventually they have defeated LA. Werle lifted the Pirates to 6th place in the National League. On October 2, 1952 after the Cardinals waived him off, the Boston Red Sox signed Werle. After two years with the Red Sox, he was acquired by the Louisville Colonels from the American Association on October 14, 1954.
