Gordon William Hunter is a former Major League Baseball player who also served as a coach and manager of a few teams in the league. Born on June 4, 1928 in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, he was originally drafted by the Brooklyn Dodgers as a right-handed batter shortstop. On October 14, 1952, he was sold to the St. Louis Browns. He played as a starting shortstop for the team in 1953 and went to play as an infielder for other teams which include the New York Yankees, Cleveland Indians and the Kansas City A's. He played for six years in the American League and appeared in 630 games. He was able to make a .219 batting average. After his major league playing career, he managed the Baltimore Orioles farm system and became the team's head coach in the 1964 season. On June 28, 1977, he left the Orioles and moved to the Texas Rangers which win 60 games with him. After one and a half season of managing the team, he posted a 146-108 record. However, he did not return to work in the Major League Baseball for any position and instead worked in Towson State University as a head coach and athletic director. He was included to the Orioles Hall of Fame in 1996.
